Why We Submit Ourselves Under the Bible (Not the Bible Under Us)

Have you ever found yourself picking and choosing which verses to follow or ignoring the parts that feel inconvenient?

It’s tempting to submit the Bible under us – to mold it to fit our preferences, schedules, or comfort zones.

But Scripture calls us to a different posture: submit yourself under the Word.

Psalm 119:105 reminds us:

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

The Word is meant to guide us, not conform to us.

Submission isn’t always easy – it means inviting God to rearrange priorities, change habits, and shape character. But it’s the path to a life that truly reflects Him.

Let’s look at a three reasons we submit ourselves under the Bible.

1. Because We Chose To

When we became Christians we agreed that we would follow Christ and that means living our life according to the Bible.

In Matthew 16 Jesus tells us that “whoever loses his life for my sake will find it”.

This means we lay down our life each day.

We lay down our flesh. Our selfish desires.

It means we ‘take up our cross and follow Him’ – we lay our life down to follow Jesus.

See, choosing to follow Jesus includes submitting our life to the Scriptures. Obeying the Word.

It doesn’t mean that we pick and choose what we like from the Bible.

It doesn’t mean that we stand firm in the Christian stances when we’re comfortable, but if it’s a stance we don’t like, then we toss it out.

No friend, we stand on the Christian stance regardless of our personal feelings because that’s what we’ve agreed to, and we submit our life under the Bible because ‘God’s ways are better than our ways’.

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

2. Because the Bible is Our Standard

As Christians we have agreed to let the Bible be our standard.

It’s easy to see this as a punishment, or maybe part of the agreement we only like when it’s comfortable and fits our current thinking.

But remember, we didn’t have to choose God. But we did.

And when we made that choice, we agreed to let the Bible be our standard and we agreed that we’d bring everything in our life under the Bible.

But when push comes to shove, if we’re really honest, we like to bring the Bible under us.

If we really want to live a life a faith, a Christ-like life, we have to put the Bible in it’s proper place in our lives… as the Standard.

This means in every area of life we stop and ask, ‘what does the Bible say about that?’

So where are you making the Bible fit your comfort, instead of aligning your life with what the Bible says?

But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’

3. Because God's Way is Better Than Ours

Have you ever felt the joy that comes when you’re following God wholeheartedly and really walking it out?

Have you ever felt the peace that surpasses all understanding because you’re taking refuge in the Almighty God?

Have you ever felt completely calm in the midst of a storm because you knew God would step in?

There is just something about living by the Bible that makes all of life make sense.

The Bible gives us the foundation, guidance, and principles for how we should live our life.

It gives us reason and explanation for things that non-believers can’t give a reason for.

It gives us hope.

God has a big plan, a perfect plan, a beautiful plan, and He lets us be a part of it.

If you read your Bible long enough you will start to see how God is in all the tiny details. How He thinks ahead, how He ties everything together.

You will start to see how He is always working and how it is always far better than we could have done and it’s only a sliver of the story.

Following God is the best adventure there is, and one I hope you dive head first into, with every ounce of your being.

Submitting yourself under the Bible, and intentionally living it out more each day is a great place to get started.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
