Beginning a journey of faith can feel exciting – but also a little overwhelming.
Where do you even start if you’ve just decided to follow Jesus, or if you’re ready to finally go deeper in your walk with Him?
Here’s the good news: growing in your faith isn’t about doing everything at once. It’s about taking steady, simple steps that draw you closer to Christ. Think of it as building a foundation brick by brick.
Here’s a roadmap to get you started:
1. Aim to Read Your Bible Daily
The Bible is where we come to know who God is and how He calls us to live.
A good starting point is to read one chapter a day from one of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John). These books tell the story of Jesus’ life, teaching, death, and resurrection.
As you read, ask yourself two simple questions:
What did I learn about God or Jesus in this chapter?
What is one thing I can apply to my life today?
This practice turns Bible reading into a personal conversation with God, not just words on a page.
If you skip a day or so, don’t get discouraged, just jump back in. Reading the Bible helps us be in relationship with God. If you forgot to call your mom one day, you’re not going to never call her ever again. So don’t treat the Bible like that either, just sit back down and open it up.
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105
2. Start Talking to God in Prayer
Prayer doesn’t have to be formal or intimidating. Think of it like talking with a close friend.
You can tell God what’s on your heart – your worries, your joys, your questions. You can thank Him for what He’s done, or simply sit quietly in His presence.
There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to pray. The important thing is to build the habit of turning to Him regularly.
If you stick around here you’ll often hear me say something like ‘take the words off the page and into your life’.
When you ask yourself, ‘what is one thing I can apply to my life today?’, from above, try to take that and pray it over yourself.
“Pray without ceasing.”
1 Thessalonians 5:17
3. Be Part of a Church
Faith isn’t meant to be lived alone. Being part of a local church helps you grow, worship alongside other believers, and find encouragement when you need it most.
If you don’t have a church home yet, start by visiting a few in your area. Look for a church that teaches the Bible faithfully and makes you feel welcomed.
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another.”
Hebrews 10:24-25
4. Take One Step at a Time
You don’t need to have it all figured out at once. God cares more about your next step of obedience than about your ability to plan the whole journey.
Start small: read your Bible, pray, and gather with other believers. These simple rhythms create space for your faith to deepen over time.
No matter how long you walk with God, you will never know everything, you will never understand everything, so just take it one day at a time and work towards growing closer to God every day.
“The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way.”
Psalm 37:23
5. Remember, You're Not Alone
Every follower of Jesus starts somewhere.
Everyone who’s already following Him, but wants to finally dig deeper starts somewhere.
What matters most is not how “strong” your faith feels today, but that you’re turning toward Him daily.
Over time, these practices – Bible reading, prayer, community – will shape you more into the likeness of Christ.
“And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:20b
